I Thought This Day Would Never Come

Yes, I made Mr. W pose for a picture with me just so I could write this post.

You know those couples who to go Disneyland wearing matching t-shirts or twinsies hats or carbon copy fanny packs? The ones who feel they have to show the world through their wardrobes that they are united in love for all eternity?

They make me cringe to my greatest depths. My spleen feels embarrassed when I see them.

I don't know what possesses a duo to think it's a good idea to dress in identical getups and go out in public, but I (like most sane people, I hope) think it is completely ridiculous. And this is why, when Mr. W and I entered the living room wearing eerily similar outfits last week before a walk, I really should have changed my clothes.

I didn't quite realize how alike we looked until we got outside and by that time both of us were feeling too stubborn to go back in and switch out our shirts.

"Let's just stick to the back roads," I told him, hoping that every occupant of Hollywood would be inside their homes, far away from the sight of us.

Of course, not ten seconds down the street, one of our neighbors appeared in his driveway and said hello to us. I'm sure he was thinking something like, "Poor guy gets married and his wife starts making him dress like her..." or maybe just "Lame." Or maybe he and his wife dress alike at theme parks and I'm totally wrong about his reaction. Anyway...

We passed several other early evening walkers as we wound up through the hills, and all of them mercifully ignored our attire. Until we were just a couple blocks from home and a man in all black put his hand to his brow to block the setting sun and get a better look at us.

"Nice outfits!" he exclaimed as we approached.

I almost ripped off my shirt and finished the walk in my bra.

"We didn't plan it, I swear!" I shrieked at him.

"Uh huh."

For the record, my shirt at least had a little embellishment on the front. But I learned my lesson: no matchy-matchy EVER again. Unless we're in the Caveman Room.

  1. Fred and I wore purple v-neck sweaters once. They were different shades, I swear.

    1. That is two shades of awesome. I bet you guys weren't even embarrassed about it either.

  2. It's one thing if you're both walking around in caveman loin cloths. But, blue shirts? Khaki shorts? C'mon, that's not really being matchy matchy...

    1. Oh but if a stranger on the street thought it was matchy matchy, it HAD to have been, right?!

  3. This post is AWESOME! I love that a total random called you out on the matchy-matchy. I remember one time that you actually changed when we showed up together in the same of jeans and a black sweater. I guess I'll just have to live with the fact that you love Mr. Wonderful more than me :-) Oh, and I'll remember to buy you guys matching fanny packs for your next anniversary.

    1. I was thinking of that black sweater incident when I wrote this! :P Mr. W accuses me of wearing a fanny pack whenever I wear my little running waist pack that has a water bottle attached to it.

  4. Ben both wore Beatles shirts (albeit different ones) when heading to his parents in AZ. When we were at the airport we thought we looked ridiculous. I think when you get married, 2 minds become one and this happens all too often. So you really can't blame couples being all matchy-matchy in the future...it wasn't on purpose!

    1. Were they actually matching Beatles shirts, though? Or just both Beatles. I definitely think there is a difference. I just found out tonight that my sister and her husband wore matching florescent green and purple shirts on their honeymoon... I was horrified...

  7. I love it! Maybe the stranger thought you were twins! At least Mr. W. doesn't have
    the "flat man" syndrome!

    1. I don't think Mr. W will ever suffer from flatman but that's because his entire wardrobe consists of the same shirt in 30 different shades, so it's easy for him to pick stuff out.

  8. Om my....I was just going to write that the flat man tradition must be carried on.....but obvoiusly your mom beat me to it. Still, the flatman is a necessary evil...he is alive and well at our house too.

  9. I saw a couple this weekend both in jeans, black tee's, and tennis shoes. I initially brushed it off because that's a standard outfit for people but they WERE matching. Darcy and I are very likely to never have this problem as he shies away from bold colors and I live in them. ;-)

  10. As long as you weren't walking two goldens in matching outfits, your cool. xo
